Vitamin A and protein interrelationships in the milk-fed lamb.

چکیده
I . The mean liver retinol reserve (retinal+ retinyl esters, expressed as retinol) of six newborn lambs was 21 ? 8 pg. The mean value for ten suckled lambs, aged 5-7 days, was 2655 +47z pg retinol per liver. 2. Three unsuckled lambs were fed ad lib. from birth for 28 days on a high-protein diet, based on lard and skim milk, without supplementary vitamin A. The diet provided sufficient vitamin A for normal growth, but insufficient to permit substantial liver reserves (43 8 pg retinol per liver). 3. Thirty-six suckled lambs aged 5-7 days were given either a lowor a high-protein diet for ZI days, with or without graded levels of retinyl acetate or &carotene. There were no significant differences in the live-weight gain or in liver retinol reserves between the lowand highprotein dietary treatments, or between the supplemented and unsupplemented groups. 4. Twelve lambs were pair-fed on either a lowor a high-protein diet from birth for PI days. Six lambs that were given a large supplement of retinyl palmitate on the 1st day of life had stored significantly less retinol in the liver at 21 days (P < 001) than six lambs given a somewhat smaller total amount of retinyl palmitate in small daily doses. Lambs given the high-protein diet had significantly greater liver retinol reserves ( P < 0.01) than lambs given the low-protein diet, with both methods of supplementation. 5. Twelve lambs were pair-fed from birth on a high-protein diet for z or 6 days. Lambs that were given retinyl palmitate dissolved in either a lowor a high-protein diet on the 1st day of life had significantly lower liver retinol reserves some 24 h later ( P < 0.01) than lambs given similar treatments on the 5th day of life. Liver retinol reserves were positively correlated with the protein concentration of the diet at the time of supplementation. 6. Eighteen lambs were pair-fed from birth with either a lowor a high-protein diet. Six pairs were given retinyl palmitate daily and three pairs were given the supplement 48 h before slaughter. The source of protein was casein. Eight out of nine lambs given the low-protein diet would have died had they not been slaughtered at between 8 and I X days of age. The time of supplementation had no significant effect on liver retinol reserves, which were very low, regardless of the dietary protein concentration. Lambs given the high-protein diet retained a significantly greater proportion (P < 005) of the dietary retinyl palmitate than lambs given the low-protein diet.

Effects of late gestation supplementation of rumen undegradable protein, vitamin E, zinc, and chlortetracycline to ewes on indices of immune transfer and productivity.
Late gestation supplementation of feed additives, such as rumen undegradable intake protein (RUIP), vitamin E, Zn, and chlortetracycline, has inconsistently improved ewe/lamb productivity. In 3 experiments, Western white-faced ewes were supplemented for at least 30 d during late gestation with 204 g/(ewe.d) on a DM basis of high (HS; 12.5% RUIP, 880 IU/kg of vitamin E, 176 mg/kg of Zn supplied ...
متن کاملEffects of Starter Protein Levels and Amounts of Milk Fed on Animal Health and Rumen Microbiota Changes in Holstein Male Calves
The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of two different levels of starter protein and amounts of milk fed on animal health, fecal score, immune responses and microbial population in the rumen of Holstein male calves. Two levels of starter crude protein (17 and 20% of starter dry matter (DM) and two levels of milk fed (7 and 10% of body weight) were combined in a 2 × 2 factorial exp...
متن کاملThe effect of dietary vitamin E and fatty acid supplementation of pregnant and lactating ewes on placental and mammary transfer of vitamin E to the lamb.
The present study investigated the effect of maternal vitamin E and fatty acid supplementation on lamb antioxidant status. Forty-eight ewes were fed one of four concentrate diets supplemented with a basal (50 mg/kg) or supranutritional (500 mg/kg) level of vitamin E plus a source of either saturated fat (Megalac; Volac Ltd, Royston, Hertfordshire, UK) or long-chain PUFA (fish oil) from 6 weeks ...
متن کاملMilk Production, Milk Fatty Acid Profiles and Blood Metabolites in Holstein Dairy Cows Fed Diets Based on Dried Citrus Pulp
The objective of the present study was to determine the effect of substitution of corn grain with dried citrus pulp (DCP) on milk composition, fatty acids profiles and blood metabolites in Holstein dairy cows. These parameters were measured in a replicated 4 × 4 latin square design experiment using eight Holstein cows. Each experimental period lasted 4 weeks. The four treatments were: control (...
متن کاملChanges of milk fat, crude protein, true protein, NPN and protein:fat ratio in Holstein cows fed a high concentrate diet from early to late lactation
Percentages and yields of fat, crude protein (CP), true protein (TP) and non-protein nitrogen (NPN) wereassessed in milk of four groups of Holstein cows, at early, mid and late lactation (days in milk 20-70, 71-110, 111-150 and 151-210), on a diet rich in concentrates during a hot summer. Four milk samples were taken from individual cows at 10-day intervals. Milk fat percentages were close to b...
